This year is our 46th anniversary commemorating the local miracle that happened in S. Francisco when community leaders joined to create the first big public menorah lighting and celebration of Chanukkah outside of Israel. In 1975 Bill Graham, the world-famous concert promoter and mensch responded to a request by Chabad leaders by creating a 22-foot mahogany Menorah. Bill supported its annual lighting until his death in 1991. Two years later, Mayor Frank Jordan declared that the first Sunday of Hanukkah each year would forever be “Bill Graham Menorah Day.
The San Francisco “Mama Menorah” set the stage for public celebrations that have become a global phenomenon with 15,000 large menorahs lit annually in cities across the United States and worldwide including: Berlin, Paris, London, Singapore, Ho Chi Min City, and Moscow.
Building the Mama Menorah in Union Square every year is a big production. Then comes the 8 nights of lighting with the "Bill Graham Menorah Day Festival" on Sunday of Chanukah. All this happens only through generous supporters and partners like you, in honor of Rabbi Langer's birthday we want to give him a gift that this Chanukah should be bigger and better than last year. Every dollar you give will be greatly appreciated.
You can be a partner in the Bill Graham Menorah Project & The Giving Kitchen by spreading the word too!! Maimonides says that every good deed, no matter how small, tips the scale of humanity toward goodness. Today you have the opportunity to see the impact of that deed last for ever.
